The 2017 SIMBL GM Awards as voted on by SIMBL GMS have been announced.
Another strong turnout at the ballot box as 21/24 SIMBL GMS posted their votes for the league's annual end of season awards.
Bristol GM Greg Checovetes was voted by his SIMBL peers to his third SIMBL GM Of The Year award. The Owls GM won his first SIMBL championship after a well-documented and infamous 0-for-5 record previously in the ULCS. San Diego GM Paul Ware finished second and Chicago GM Mike Lynch third in the voting.
Los Angeles SS Jose Arenas came one RBI shy of tying Daryl Ryles' 2008 record of 172 leading the SIMBL and also hit .336 with 45 home runs to lead the UL earning him the second UL MVP award of his career. San Diego catcher Aaron Rasch wins his second consecutive SL MVP award after hitting .388 with 43 HR and 140 RBI. Bristol's Barry Grady and Chicago rookie Henry Cheesman finished second respectively in the MVP voting. Chicago 3B R.J. Poole, who became the second player in league history to belt 50 HR in a season and also drove in 169 runs, the third-most in a season in SIMBL history, finished a distant third in the SL balloting.
Texas' Justin Bushman wins his first UL Hurler Of The Year award after a midseason trade from Asheville going 18-8 with a 2.59 ERA overall. San Diego's perpetual Bobby Grimes wins his astonishing seventh SL Hurler Of The Year at 34 years-old by going 22-2 with a 2.29 ERA this season. New York former SFA Randy Koufax and Chicago's Glenn Murphy finished second in their leagues in the balloting for the season's best pitchers.
Calgary's Thomas Akers becomes the first player in league history to win back-to-back Middle Reliever Of The Year awards and also becomes the second player to win the award twice, joining Salvador Sanchez, as well by winning the UL MROTY. Boston's David Stoltzfus was second in the UL. Chicago's two-time All-SIMBL reliever Jesus Rodriguez wins the SL Middle Reliever Of The Year while his Hitmen teammate John Bostick comes in second-place.
Bristol's Richard Bell wins the UL Fireman Of The Year while Los Angeles rookie Dennis Higgs comes in second. Asheville's Jeffrey Dempsey was voted SL Fireman Of The Year while San Diego's Bill Hyer was second. Bell becomes the second player in SIMBL history, joining Oregon's Charles Vue, to win both the Middle Reliever Of The Year and Fireman Of The Year awards in their careers.
Dallas' Constantino Angulo was voted UL Rookie Of The Year while Boston's Miguel Muniz came in second-place. Marin's rookie first baseman Frank Marzano, who led the UL with a .385 batting average this season, was mysteriously left off the ballot by StatsLab in error. Chicago's Henry Cheesman, who set a new SIMBL single-season batting average record with a .397 clip last season, was overwhelming named SL Rookie Of The Year with Colchester's Gabriel Saavedra coming in second.
The 2017 SIMBL Gold Gloves have also been announced. San Diego 2B Michael Larson wins the fifth Gold Glove of his career. Ruston SS Jeffrey Donmoyer wins his fourth consecutive Gold Glove and fourth of his career. Las Vegas pitcher Anthony Puffer wins his second straight as does Ruston CF Comet Verae. All award winners are first-time Gold Glovers. Ruston and Boston placed a league-high three players on each team.
