Smith Belts Number 400 Thursday, April 23rd, 2054 Knoxville's outstanding first baseman Gene Smith joined the 400 home run club today at Jack Daniels Field with a booming blast in the Lumberkings win over the Roosters. They topped Rochester 5-0. On his milestone day Smith had 1 hit in 4 at-bats with 2 runs batted in and 1 run scored. Tongue-in-cheek he told the press, "Don't tell me when I get close to the next milestone. Just tell me after I reach it. It will be easier to hit that way." Smith has played in 1805 games with a .270 lifetime batting average. Among his 1905 hits are 322 doubles, 20 triples and 400 home runs. He also has scored 972 runs and driven in 1175 runs.
