Boyer Holds Bend Scoreless
|
Brent Boyer of the Asheville Smokies was on top of his game today.
The 28-year-old tantalized the Bend Bandits with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 11-0 shutout.
"He had the changeup working," Bend manager Ted Williams said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Asheville hurler had 7 strikeouts, gave up 4 walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.
Boyer told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
In 2 starts this season Boyer has gathered 3 wins while suffering 2 losses. He has pitched 29 innings, allowed 29 hits, struck out 26 and has a 1.86 ERA.
