The Rochester Roosters overcame a fine performance by Asheville shortstop James Polanski to defeat the Smokies, 5-4, at Blue Ridge Stadium. Polanski was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Kevin Carter got the save, his 40th in 42 chances. The win gives Rochester a season record of 82-78.

Marvin Thomas LaDuke, who finished 4th in the SL in slugging percentage with .562 last year, aided the Rochester cause with a 2-run single in the top of the ninth. For the game, the right fielder went 3-4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.

"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Asheville manager Pete McGowan. "The effort was great."
